Welcome to Year 5/6

Dear parents, carers and children,

We have had a great start to the Autumn term and the children have settled in really well. Our topic is ‘Alchemy Island’ and we have been exploring the map using co-ordinates and finding out interesting facts about gold among other interesting enterprises! We’ve been reading a variety of books as a class, including ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ and ‘The Arrival’. Using these stories, we have produced some lovely, imaginative and descriptive writing and created our very own portals that lead to different dimensions!

Here are a few reminders for the year ahead:

Times tables, spellings and weekly reads will be checked on a Friday

Times Table test (Children know which table they are on and need to spend time learning these every week). Having good knowledge of their times tables helps in many areas of the maths curriculum so please ensure that they are practising them regularly.

Spelling test (children need to spend time learning these every week). The children have a spellings booklet that has the half term spellings.

We are encouraging the children to read a minimum of three times each week at home and we will check they have achieved this (please make sure your child has their reading diary in school every day and you have signed the diary to prove your child has read three times).

All week – PE kits should be brought into school on the first day of the half term and remain in school until the end of that term. It is a legal requirement that children participate in all PE lessons and for hygienic reasons they must change into clothing that is suitable. Their PE kit needs to include plimsolls, outdoor trainers, shorts, t-shirt and suitable warm clothing for outdoor games.

Online support

Mathletics (www.mathletics.co.uk) is an excellent website that school has subscribed to and we would like to encourage children to use this on a regular basis. Each child has their own individual log in that can be provided by the class teacher. We will be setting homework on mathletics.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button – Hit the Button is great for practising times tables and working on speed!

Please check the school website (http://hillocks.notts.sch.uk/) for updates and information during the school year.

Information is also posted on OurSchoolApp which can be downloaded via the App store.
