Nursery Homework

Our ‘homework’ in nursery is to develop a love of books in your children!

It is really important that your children have the opportunity to hear lots of stories read aloud to them and are then given time to join in with the stories, talk about what they see in the pictures and what they have heard. This helps young children to learn how stories are structured in preparation for independent writing, develop a wider vocabulary and improve speaking and listening skills.

We ask that you purchase a book bag from Jo in the office and then we will set you up with a reading diary and a bedtime book. You will have the opportunity to change your child’s bedtime book on a Monday, Wednesday and a Friday and we encourage you to choose the book with your child and discuss why you may like to read the story or what it might be about. Don’t worry if your child wants to read the same book several times – this is normal and really good for your children’s developing skills!

Reading Challenge

We would like to set you and your child a little challenge during your time in nursery – can you share a story at least 5 times a week and record it in your reading diary? We will have a sneaky look in your diary during Wednesday sessions and will add your name to the star readers wall of fame in our story tent. The children that manage to read 5 times a week the most times during each term will receive a little prize!

Good Luck!
