TENNIS TOURNAMENT- YEAR 5

Well done to our year 5 Tennis team! Thank you for representing Hillocks at Sutton Academy. You showed great passion and determination! Keep it up!

INDOOR ROWING YEAR 3/4

A huge well done to all the children who participated in the indoor rowing event at Ashfield School last week. Out of 18 schools, Hillocks came 5th! This is a massive improvement from the 2017-2018 result where we came 15th in the same event. AMAZING PROGRESS with a combined rowing distance of over 4000 metres.

CROSS-COUNTRY YEAR 5/6

Over 350 children from other schools took part in this event.

The boys came 22nd overall and the girls came 5th overall.

One of our year 5 girls came 3rd out of 120 runners in her race. As a result, she has now been selected to compete in the district finals to represent Hillocks!

Each child ran approximately 0.7 miles, they gave their absolute best and supported each other along the way!

BURPS, BOTTOMS & BILE

What a great first half term we have had! The children have thoroughly enjoyed our first Cornerstones topics ‘Burps, Bottoms & Bile’: we’ve investigated our teeth and their importance, by writing some amazing non-chronological reports; we’ve studied the effects sugary drinks have on tooth enamel; we’ve read and completed work around David Walliams’ book ‘Demon Dentist’; we’ve researched the digestive system and identify how our food gets from ‘chew to poo’; and much much more. The children especially enjoyed our investigation into plaque using disclosing tablets and making their own set of clay teeth. Well done to all of year 4 for the hard work and effort that has been put in this term!

Half Term Round Up

Seeing as it’s our last week, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for all your support with settling your children into life of F2.

We look forward to welcoming you to our little Harvest singalong assembly on Wednesday at 9.15am.

Also keep an eye out for our next newsletter which will be for our next topic, “Why do squirrels eat nuts?” We cannot wait to explore this autumnal topic with the children. Watch this space!

Welcome to Year 5/6

Dear parents, carers and children,

We have had a great start to the Autumn term and the children have settled in really well. Our topic is ‘Alchemy Island’ and we have been exploring the map using co-ordinates and finding out interesting facts about gold among other interesting enterprises! We’ve been reading a variety of books as a class, including ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ and ‘The Arrival’. Using these stories, we have produced some lovely, imaginative and descriptive writing and created our very own portals that lead to different dimensions!

Here are a few reminders for the year ahead:

Times tables, spellings and weekly reads will be checked on a Friday

Times Table test (Children know which table they are on and need to spend time learning these every week). Having good knowledge of their times tables helps in many areas of the maths curriculum so please ensure that they are practising them regularly.

Spelling test (children need to spend time learning these every week). The children have a spellings booklet that has the half term spellings.

We are encouraging the children to read a minimum of three times each week at home and we will check they have achieved this (please make sure your child has their reading diary in school every day and you have signed the diary to prove your child has read three times).

All week – PE kits should be brought into school on the first day of the half term and remain in school until the end of that term. It is a legal requirement that children participate in all PE lessons and for hygienic reasons they must change into clothing that is suitable. Their PE kit needs to include plimsolls, outdoor trainers, shorts, t-shirt and suitable warm clothing for outdoor games.

Online support

Mathletics (www.mathletics.co.uk) is an excellent website that school has subscribed to and we would like to encourage children to use this on a regular basis. Each child has their own individual log in that can be provided by the class teacher. We will be setting homework on mathletics.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button – Hit the Button is great for practising times tables and working on speed!

Please check the school website (http://hillocks.notts.sch.uk/) for updates and information during the school year.

Information is also posted on OurSchoolApp which can be downloaded via the App store.
